Lessons from Lotusland: Pollination & Plant Dispersal Strategies
Wednesday, August 13th, 20255:30 - 6:30PM PST
Presented by Dr. Bruce Tiffney
Plants cannot move, which sets up a problem - how to move gametes (genetic material) between individuals of one species, and then how to move the product of fertilization (seeds) away from the parent plant. Consequently plants have evolved a range of fascinating pollination and dispersal mechanisms which enhance the color and diversity of our gardens.
This engaging webinar, presented by Dr. Bruce Tiffney, will explore the diverse strategies that plants use to reproduce and attract pollinators. This presentation will take you on a journey through Lotusland’s living collections, highlighting key examples of these interactions and adaptations.

Dr. Bruce H. Tiffney Bruce Tiffney taught evolutionary biology for 9 years at Yale University before arriving in Santa Barbara in 1986. He has been a Professor of Geology in the Department of Earth Science and Professor of Biology and Dean in the College of Creative Studies at UCSB. His research is focused on fossil plants, explaining his apparent multiple personalities.
